What a fun day!

Today we had the most bowlers we’ve ever had at our Bowl-a-thon. Forty students took part and by all accounts, everyone had a great time!

Some families are fundraising based on the number of pins each bowler knocked down.  I’ve scanned in the score sheets and put them into a PDF file you can download. Cllick on the image below. Some of the kids used nicknames so hopefully, they’ll remember what lane they were on to make finding their score easier.

Our Spring session of [email protected] includes two options for both halves of a student’s brain.

Excercise creativity in Drawing Basics, taught by returning Ty Meier. The kids loved his class this past winter and he’s ready to help more students learn to draw.

Then put your thinking caps on (not really, no funny hats required – totally optional) in Physics is Fun! to learn about Electricity and Magnetism from Crystle Pishon, our resident Physics expert.

Both classes run for 6 weeks, with a make-up 7th week if necessary. You can look at each class below by clicking on the links above.

Members should log in to get the member price. Non-members can register directly for each event.

Each class’ payment is processed separately so if you sign up for both, you’ll need to return to the appropriate class page after paying for the first class.

If you have any issues, please contact [email protected] and we’ll get you sorted.

It’s time for our biggest FUNdraiser of the year!

Last year our goal was $900 and we raised $970! So I’ve set the bar even higher to a crazy $1200. Can we do it? I bet we can!

Here’s what you need to do to get started:

  1. RSVP to the Bowl-a-Thon by April 11, 2018.  We need a headcount to give the bowling center, and to make sure we have enough to meet their attendance requirements. Even if you can’t attend, you can still help by raising money, so keep reading on to step 2.
  2. Start gathering donations from sponsors. You can ask family, friends, businesses – whoever you want. You can download a flyer to share with the people you ask that explains a little bit about Gear Up. Click to download our Bowl-a-Thon flyer.
    1. Sponsors can make a flat donation (like $25) or they can donate based on how many pins you knock down while playing (10 cents per pin for example). The maximum possible pins is 300 per game (that’s 12 strikes in a row!). We’ll be playing two games.
    2. Here is a donation sheet to help you keep track of your donor’s information.
    3. Donors can pay online or give you cash or checks (made out to Gear Up Homeschoolers).
    4. Make sure you tell everyone that their donations are tax deductible. Grownups love that! We’ll provide them with a receipt once their donation is received, so make sure you get a correct email or mailing address for every sponsor.
  3. After you’ve had a ton of fun bowling, go back to your per pin sponsors and collect the total money due. The deadline for handing in the money is April 20, 2018 (one week after the Bowl-a-Thon. This is SUPER important!).

Have questions? Here are some answers:

  1. Can I go to the Bowl-a-Thon if I don’t fundraise? Yes, you can. However, each bowler will need to pay $12 to cover the cost of the two games and shoe rentals.
  2. Can I fundraise if I can’t go to the Bowl-a-Thon? We’ll miss you! But yes you can and we super appreciate your efforts.
  3. How much should I try to raise? The obvious answer is “As much as you can!” However, if every Gear Up family raised $60 we’d meet our goal. But we don’t have any fixed number families need to raise, though we do need to cover our costs for the event so as much as is practical for your family. Get creative! Try asking if your donors have a matching policy where they work. Some businesses will match charitable distributions of their employees. If you need our non-profit info for that just let us know. We’re happy to provide documentation to employers.
  4. Where and when is it? All the details are on the event page which you can find here: https://gearuphomeschoolers.org/events/3rd-annual-bowl-a-thon/
  5. What if I can’t get all the donations in by the deadline? Things happen, we understand. We ask that you do your very best to make sure we have the money by the deadline because our fiscal year ends in April. If we receive funds late it makes our bookkeeping a little more difficult as this one event will span multiple years.
  6. Who do I contact if I have questions? For questions about the online donations or the event please contact Crystle ([email protected] or any Friday). If you have questions about the fundraiser in general and what the funds will be used for you can ask any board member.

Are you looking for challenging, academic, but fun classes for your children? Gear Up is adding classes that just might be what you need.

We’re offering three 6-week sessions that will run from October 2017 through Spring 2018. The classes include Spanish and Physics. Here are brief descriptions of each:

Pura Vida Spanish! The traditional way of teaching foreign language is not necessarily the most effective. See how gestures, action sequences, and skits accelerate the process! I would love to teach your children Spanish in ways that will build real fluency, engage, stimulate, and produce results. Discover the power of storytelling!

See the details here.

Understanding Physics through ExperimentationEver wonder why the sky is blue? Or why a baseball travels farther than a wiffle ball when thrown? And do toilet bowls always flush counter-clockwise? These and other puzzling questions will be the subject of this fun, hands-on class.

See the details here.

The fee for the classes is $55 per student per 6-week session for Gear Up members. Non-members are welcome and encouraged to sign up, but will first need to join Gear Up (for insurance purposes). The annual fee for membership is $50 per family which also entitles you to come to any of our classes held on Friday, game nights on Tuesday, or any other event we sponsor (including our epic annual Bowl-a-thon!).

You can see more about our other class schedules here.

EIGHT ‘Wonderful’ Warner businesses will be opening their walls to host our member’s art work.

A very warm thank you to our community for all of their support! Stop by these locations to check out unique art created by local homeschoolers :

2nd Annual Bowl-a-thon!

It’s time for our annual Bowl-a-thon event!

It will be held at Boutwell’s Bowling in Concord, NH (same place as last year) on March 10, 2017.

This fundraiser helps pay for our yearbook. Our goal is to give every family one yearbook for free, but to do that we need a lot of money.

Our goal is $900. Last year we raised around $750, so we’d like to top that this year. The yearbook will be even more special, with the option to personalize up to four pages and the back cover. You’ll get to make your yearbook the most special one yet.

Here’s what you need to do to get started:

  1. RSVP to the Bowl-a-thon by March 7, 2017.
A minimum donation of $10 per bowler is needed because that is our cost for the event.

  3. After you’ve had a ton of fun bowling, go back to your per pin sponsors and collect the total money due. The deadline for handing in the money is March 17th, 2017 (one week after the bowl-a-thon).
  4. Get excited for an awesome yearbook!
